Peer Mediation in 2015

Steve Ladbrook —

Peer Mediation gives students the skills to be able to mediate problems. This is part of the Year 7/8 Leadership Programme.

The Training

At the start of the year, any Year 7 and 8 students who wanted to become a Peer Mediator put their name down and got some training on how to solve problems by Miss O’Connor. We did a whole range of activities like solving problems that we would face in the playground. We acted out possible situations and practised how we would solve them. We also watched a video on Peer Mediation from another school which showed Peer Mediators solving a problem between three people.

What you do in Peer Mediation

Peer Mediation is a leadership role which involves problem solving by Year 7 and 8 students. Your job as a Peer Mediator is to solve a problem that a group of students have in the playground. You need to take them to a quiet place to help them work out their problems. Also you need to be netural and not take sides when you are solving problems.

Overall Statement

Overall, Peer Mediation is a leadership role that is enjoyable and it teaches you how to solve problems, by getting students to think about the other person’s point of view and see how they are affected by their own actions. Most of the time you may not have any problems to solve, when there is no problems it’s good because we know the problems students have in the playground are reducing. You also collaborate with other people at the same time.

I learnt a lot from the issues that I need to solve (Jonathan Jun).

I learnt that when you are solving problems with little kids, that you have to have a lot of patience to help them (Rebecca Keylard).

It was fun working with all the children who had problems and being able to make them happy (Ryan Pringle).

I learnt that Peer Mediation is not about telling people off and it’s actually about solving people’s problems (Mollyanne Jennings).

I really enjoyed Peer Mediation because it was good reducing the amount of problems in the playground (Joseph Black).

I really enjoyed solving problems because it felt good to help others. I also learned that patience is important when solving problems (Emily Close).

I liked being in a group with Year 7s since they never did it before and I enjoyed being with the Group leader and helping them out (Jacob McClure).

In Peer Mediation, I enjoyed solving the problems and learning about listening to both sides of a story to solve it (Honor Cloake).
