Treaty of Waitangi

Margaret Trotter —

Monday the 6 February school will be closed for us celebrating the Treaty of Waitangi.

Our students have been learning and talking about the Treaty of Waitangi.  The 3 P's of the Treaty of Waitangi in education are - partnership, participation and protection.

The Treaty of Waitangi is a treaty that was signed on the 6th of February, 1840 by Captain William Hobson on behalf of the British Crown and Māori chiefs from the North Island of New Zealand. This treaty is an important agreement in New Zealand’s history and is the foundation of the political constitution of the country of New Zealand. It has also played an important role in creating a good political relationship between the government of New Zealand and the Māori people.

The day this treaty was signed is celebrated across New Zealand as Waitangi Day. Waitangi Day has been a national holiday in New Zealand since 1974.
