Principal's Message...

Debbie Halkett —

Our Purpose: To prepare students to be active participants who will contribute to their community. Tēnā koutou katoa, Malo e lelei, Talofa lava, Bula vinaka

I could not be more proud of our students and staff for a very positive athletics sports day. I appreciate that some of our whanau were disappointed that they were unable to be at this event. This year for many has been a rollercoaster of changes, stress and uncertainty. With 18 school days left, our staff are determined to keep routine and normality as much as we can.

We will be having our Prizegiving and celebrating our Year 8 students, however these events will look different to what has taken place in the past. We will let you know closer to the time what these events will look like. At this stage both Prizegivings will be live streamed via our Facebook page. With this in mind, please check that your child is in the correct OIS uniform each day - no jewellery, makeup, hoodies or nail polish. If your child is out of uniform, they need to take a note from you to the school office to obtain a uniform pass.

One of a number of events that was modified due to COVID was the Otago Band Quest as they were still able to to enter digitally. Our band The Monochromatix won the Otago Bandquest Competition. This band members were Olivia Morris, Winnie Conlan, Will Dukes, Nishan Ormandy and Hudson McDermott. A huge congratulations to them all.

With the end of the year drawing closer it is important that students continue to show the IDEAL values that we are so proud of at OIS.

Today, at assembly I spoke about ensuring that we continue to strive to be the best that we can be in all aspects of our life. No matter where we are in our community, I am well aware that we are all human and can all make mistakes from time to time. As you will know some of our best lessons can come from our mistakes. One of the greatest things we can do when we make a mistake is own it, and put it right because we can’t take it back, and we can’t undo the action. A huge part of growing up is taking responsibility for our own behaviour, understanding that we can only control our behaviour and our response to others. As parents and caregivers we need to let our children take responsibility for their behaviour by supporting them to do the right thing.

Heading into the next three and a half weeks we are going to really focus on KINDNESS. While we are all getting tired and ready for a break, it is important that we stop and think about our actions and reactions.

Staffing update: Ms Fletcher is on leave for the rest of the year and we are fortunate to have Miss Brien who has been teaching in Room 4 since the start of the week, and will work closely with our Year 8 team to ensure a smooth transition through to the end of the year. Olivia started her teaching career at Oamaru Intermediate and has just returned from overseas.

We welcome Suzy Oakes back to the support team for the rest of the year.
