Principal's Message

Debbie Halkett —

Welcome back to Term 3. A special welcome to 5 new students; Anya, Maddy, Lucan, Joemer and Georgia.

We also welcome 5 Korean students who are part of a larger group with others at Waitaki Girls' and Waitaki Boys'.

Keeping with the number 5 we have a very busy schedule over the next 5 weeks.

8 August - OIS Cross Country,  Maori Consultation Hui 6pm,  Pasifika Consultation Fono 7pm

16 August - 6pm Open Night for students enrolling at OIS in 2019

18-23 August - Japanese student group

22 August - James Hargest Exchange in Invercargill

23 August - Fiefia Night

Even without the groups of international students visiting we have a very diverse cultural mix in our school with students from 5 different nationalities enrolled.

It is very important that as a school we are culturally inclusive. To develop in this area we need to develop our understandings of culture, identity and language. Our starting point for this is to talk with parents from our two biggest non pakeha groups. We have scheduled meetings with our Maori community and Pasifika community on August 8. It is really important for teachers and your children to meet and chat over goals, aspirations and learn from you what is important for your child on a cultural sense.

As a result of these meetings we will be able to set goals, be more responsive and celebrate our diversity.
