'Romeo and Juliet' by Noa Smith

Belinda Hirst —

As part of my Room 14 Literacy group, we have been studying Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. We have explored the major themes and are analysing the characters and their interactions. We were given the task of writing a letter from a character's point of view. I stepped into Juliet's shoes and wrote to her parents about her situation and emotions. After collecting enough ideas, I started to write, slowly turning my work into something that took longer than expected to complete. In the end, it was done, and I was proud. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Dearest Mother and Father, Alack! Alas! Alakazam!

I’ve fallen in love with another man!

My heart doth not long to be with Count Paris,

He’s a bumbling oaf, he’s sure to embarass!

But at the masquerade ball last night,

My eyes fell on ye ‘mazing sight!

A tall young man with short brown hair,

As kind as a mouse and unnaturally fair.

His grey big eyes reflect the moon,

I was now in love, when suddenly BOOM!

He took my hand and began to dance,

But I didn’t know that it wouldn’t last,

After that, a kiss he did send,

“Goodbye, my darling!” and away he went.

Shortly after, the ball did finish,

And I sulked away, my hope’s diminished.

For I would never see Romeo again,

And because of that, my heart won’t mend.

I ran out onto my balcony,

“Oh Romeo, Romeo, where could you be?”

“I’m here, my love!” he said to I,

He came from the bush's, and I gave a sigh.

“I love you my sweet, my darling,” said he,

“Can I ask you a question? Will you marry me?”

“Yes, my love! But where would we go?

It would be a disaster if our parents did know!”

“Relax, my darling,” Romeo said,

“I know a place where we can wed!”

And the next day, at the church we did marry,

Given to rings that we’d always carry.

In five minute tops, we were husband and wife,

Vowing to stick with these labels for life!

Later that day, when I was at home,

Giving my hair it’s hourly comb,

When “Here ye! Here ye!” the town cried,

“Tybalt capulet has suddenly died!

Romeo killed him with his very own sword!

The prince has banished him to mantua!”

And right at that moment, my heart was shattered,

It seemed like nothing anymore mattered!

In sheer pain and desperation,

I came to Lawrence with an explanation.

“Please help me Friar! Tybalt is dead!

And Romeo’s been sent to Mantua!” I said.

The Friar replied, “Young Juliet,

I’ve already got a plan, ready and set!”

Alack! Alas! Alakazam!

I’ve fallen in love with another man!

Goodbye, my parents, I wish you well,

Life without you will be rather swell!

Goodbye forever, good luck, adieu,

Sincerely, Juliet Montague
