Year 12 Media Studies

Ada Duffy, Year 13 —

As part of the Year 12 Media Studies course, we, in groups, had to come up with and execute a radio-show at OAR fm (Otago Access Radio).

All radio-shows needed to have the necessary tidbits required for a successful show: a target audience, a variety of radio conventions such as time-checks or an interview and a decided and definitive radio style... to name a few. I partnered with Amy Blair and Blaire Hanna and together we created NCEA: News, Culture, Education and Advice. We wanted our show to provide an informative yet entertaining outlook on senior school and making the seemingly looming future life choices.

All groups were given two months to prepare each respective radio-show; they were to be 30 minutes in length, minus four minutes that were devoted to Otago Access Radio ads. Everything was planned to cover every detail, accomplished by a very lengthy production plan. Our group was first to present and everything ran smoothly, but for a tiny slip of my tongue that I will never forget, though no one else really seemed to notice. There was a great feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction amongst the group as we had created something so special to all of us and it was great to see it successfully carried out. After the almighty NCEA was presented, the youth coordinator at OAR fm, Domi, asked us if we’d be interested in joining the ‘Youth Zone’ programme, an initiative that runs 4pm-5pm weekdays and works to establish a fresh youth perspective. Sadly Amy and Blaire were unable to amalgamate, but I have joined Youth Zone Mondays. It is a wonderful opportunity for teenagers to discuss and engage in topics they are passionate about, and I strongly advise either tuning in to 105.4 OAR fm or getting involved if you’re interested. If you are, you can email the youth coordinator Domi at youthzone@oar.org.nz, or better yet, study Media in Years 12 and 13!
