Community Action Projects

Ms F. Speight, Social Studies —

Last week in i-time Year 9 and 10 Social Studies students shared their community action projects which they had been working really hard on over the last 5 weeks of Term 2 during i-time. We have been amazed by the thoughtfulness and commitment shown by the girls in carrying out their community based project. We know that these projects will make a huge difference to the different groups involved in the community.

There were a variety of groups and organisations that the girls helped and you can click here to see a small sample of what the girls did. One of the groups that 10Ch helped out was FosterHope. Since lockdown FosterHope have given out 800 packs to children needing emergency foster care. This is more than three times the demand they would usually experience and can be attributed to the challenges faced by the wider Otago and Central Otago community due to Covid19. A group of 10Ch students visited Juanita Willems from FosterHope on Wednesday to give the 83 pairs of underwear they had bought as a result of their fundraising activities. At the moment FosterHope is in need of basics for teenagers including shampoo and new underwear as well as small snuggly blankets. If you can donate any of these items please leave them at the office and Rose Anderson from 10Ch or Ms Speight will ensure they reach FosterHope.

Part of our learning in Term 2 in Social Studies also involved looking at developing countries around the world and possible strategies to improve the standard of living. Special mention goes to Juju Moharram for her project looking at Uganda. To raise further awareness of the issues facing Uganda she has created a website which you can see by clicking here. https://uganda2020.weebly.com/
