Otago Girls' High School

Relay for Life

Lily Schaumann, Community Services Prefect - April 2, 2025

Last Saturday, our Prefects, Amnesty, and other OGHS groups took part in Relay for Life.

From 7pm to 7am, the twelve hour relay is a Cancer Society fundraising event, and this year it took place at the University Clocktower.

During the Relay, our Prefect team was second on the leaderboard of most funds raised by a team. Since then, we have increased our funds, and have currently raised a total of $7,446, the highest amount of any team in the Otago Relay. Similarly, Nikita Lu, one of our Arts Prefects, was the second highest individual fundraiser during the event, and has surpassed this and is now the highest fundraising individual in the entire relay. This is an impressive accomplishment for both Nikita and the Prefects, and we should be very proud of the difference that these funds collected will have

A huge congratulations to all of the seven Otago Girls teams who took part in the relay, including the OGHS Minions, Otago Petanque Club, Sleepy Sigmas, Slay Duo, Ladies of the 80’s, Amnesty and the Prefects.

With all teams combined, our school has managed to collect an astounding $14,600. This is an incredible contribution to the Relay’s overall $105,000.

Fundraising will go towards cancer research, shaping cancer prevention health policies, practical support for patients such as transport and accommodation, and emotional care including counselling services. All of these can have a huge impact on New Zealanders who are struggling with a cancer diagnosis.

There were a variety of prizes available to encourage high spirits and add a bit of friendly competition between teams; such as prizes for the best dressed team and individual, highest team and individual fundraiser, and the most laps completed by an individual.

The OGHS Minions’ positivity throughout the night led to them winning the best team spirit of the relay. Our OGHS Amnesty team also took away the prize for the Best Decorated Site, with their theme Pink Pony Club.

Although the Prefects sadly did not win the best dressed team this year, we all looked fabulous with our Disney character costumes, and we received many compliments regarding our dressed up group throughout the night.

As well as 12 hours of walking, the event was broken up by some fun activities to keep the Spirit of the relay alive, such as Karaoke, Just dance, Live Music, Yoga, Min it to Win it, and the speed dating show hosted by the Edge, Relay for love.

Aside from the fun, it truly was a very powerful and beautiful event.

Speakers shared their personal experiences and struggles with cancer diagnosis and treatment, and also the massive difference that support from the Cancer Society has made.

At Midnight, the beautiful and emotional candlelight ceremony occurred, where we fondly commemorated loved ones who have lost their fights to cancer. This ceremony was accompanied by the beautiful voice of our ex-head girl Paige Milburn.

Overall, it was a very successful event, and it was wonderful to see the strength of our Dunedin community as we united for this amazing cause.

A tremendous thank you to everyone who donated to support our Otago Girls teams!

Donations are open until the beginning of May, so any last minute donations would be greatly appreciated.
