World of Work

Ms F Speight, Social Sciences —

On Thursday, ex-OGHS student and now Assistant Professor of Cultural History, History and Art History at Utrecht University, Dr Rachel Gillett spoke to some of the Year 10 Social Studies students and senior History students about her research and her life since leaving Otago Girls'. Rachel is an engaging speaker and students were captivated by her talk. Rachel talked about some of her research which touches on our topic this term looking at the World of Work and how it has changed over time. Students were introduced to concepts such as gender, work and reproductive labour and learnt a little about some of Rachel's research into life in interwar Paris. Rachel shared some confronting primary sources that challenged students' thinking whilst providing context around how women such as Josephine Baker were depicted at the time and why. Rachel also talked about her career path and the challenges and successes she has faced since leaving Otago Girls'. She spoke about how the subjects she chose at school including French, History and Music have all helped her in her career journey. Students also learnt a little about the Gillett Sisters Cup for Independence of Mind which is one of the prestige prizes presented every year at prize giving.
