Physical Education and Health: Term 2 Highlights
Term 2 has been full of energy, growth, and hands-on learning across Health, Physical Education, and Outdoor Education!
Junior PE and Health
Year 9 students kicked things off this term by training for their team duathlon, using different fitness methods to boost their endurance and meet their personal goals and sports science knowledge. Year 10s explored biomechanics by leading peers through practical activities. In Health, the focus turned to relationships, effective communication, keeping safe online and knowing our rights and responsibilities — key skills for rangatahi.
"Having accountability for our own fitness goal made me more motivated because I did not have to rely on others." – Year 9 student
Senior PE and Health
Year 11 students are working towards their external, using the game ki-o-rahi to explore how biophysical principles, te ao Māori, and sociocultural influences shape movement. In Health, students have been unpacking important issues like mental health, body image, and social media to understand factors that influence decision making.
“Learning the Pūrākau behind ki o rahi has helped me understand the different roles in the game and gives more meaning to the way we play and move" – Year 11 student
Year 12 Physedders have been applying biophysical principles to improve their badminton forehand serve. With focused practice and analysis, they’re now demonstrating their progress in game situations.
Year 13s researched personal physical activity issues and created strategies for improving their future well-being. On the practical side, students have been mastering the hockey sweep pass. By digging into the biomechanics behind the skill, they’ve been able to refine their technique and improve their performance.
"My sweep pass actually improved once I understood the movement behind it!" – Year 13 student
Outdoor Education
Students have been out adventuring — mountain biking the trails of Dunedin, tramping and kayaking. These real-world experiences are helping them build resilience, teamwork, and leadership in the great outdoors.
Looking Ahead to Term 3
Junior students will be participating in a range of sporting contexts to show improvement in practical skills such as throwing, catching, striking and tactical play.
Year 13 PE students take to the snow for their cross country ski camp at the Snow Farm in Cardrona whilst Year 12 PE students will manage safety in the outdoors during their camp.
Year 11 students are collating evidence for their final external assessments this term.
Senior OE classes are participating in day tramps and planning local journeys.
We are proud of everything our students have achieved this term and can’t wait to see what Term 3 brings.
