12 Science Geology Field trip

Mrs C Beaman, Science —

Last term Year 12 Science spent a day travelling around the wider Dunedin area, investigating significant geological sites for their internal on 'The Rocks of Dunedin'. We headed out first to Brighton and learnt about the 200 million year old Haast Schist which was uplifted by a large earthquake 2000 years ago. We investigated the sand and determined that it had travelled from the Southern Alps, down the Clutha River to be deposited on Brighton Beach, as it also contained the same minerals as the Haast Schist. Then we began our journey learning about the volcanic history of Dunedin which lasted 16 million years. Our final destination was the Pyramids of Okia Reserve which is a large dyke of Basalt rock from inside the Dunedin Volcanic Complex which has been exposed due to erosion over millions of years. At the back of the Little Pyramid (Te Matai O Kia) we found a cave where there has been evidence of Maori occupation, perhaps about 1750, and therefore it is an important archaeological site. It was incredible to imagine the stories of the area. We had a wonderful day! Thanks to Ms Kingi for her wonderful driving!
