Year 12/13 Outdoor Education

Ms S. McNatty, HOD Physical Education —

On 6 and 7 June, nine girls including myself from Year 12/13 Outdoor Ed class and Year 12 Sports had a wonderful opportunity to take part in low ropes and high ropes courses at Invercargill with Adventure Southland.

This was something none of us had ever done before so we were all excited yet nervous at the same time. On the first day, we started with the low ropes course. Our instructor from Adventure Southland had briefed us in preparation for the ropes course and we also had set a couple of personal goals that we’d like to achieve during the entirety of the course. It was a cold and rainy first day but we did not let the bad weather get in the way. As a group, we worked together as we did the low ropes activities. We found ourselves brainstorming ideas on how to solve each of the obstacles which in the end, we successfully managed to complete. After we had done all the activities, we headed back to our campsite and after dinner, we drove to the cinema to watch a documentary film about outdoors courtesy of Ms McNatty. By the time we arrived back at the campsite, we were ready to have a good night’s sleep.

On the second day, we were given a more serious briefing by our instructor, as the last part of this ropes course (the high ropes), is very much different from the one we did the previous day. In this course, we would be doing obstacles which required us to climb, jump, walk on a rope, swing, etc all from at least five meters above the ground and we were also attached to a belay cable to ensure safety. The last day was definitely more challenging which allowed us to overcome our fears. Overall, this trip was certainly fun and I am glad that my classmates and I had successfully completed the activities of the ropes course.
