International Programme - A Great Day to Be an Albatross
During the senior parallel exams, I took some of our international students who are here for one term to some of the wonderful sites around our city. Our first outing was out to Otago Peninsula and it was a great day to be an albatross. We were treated to seeing three chicks kiting (hovering above the ground trying to figure out the wind and their wings), then an adult flew around then eventually landed, regurgitated and fed its chick. It was very exciting to see so much activity, and in the more than twenty years that I have been doing there, it was the best. Our next stop was Larnach Castle where we did a self-guided tour and enjoyed some delicious treats from the cafe. The weather was spectacular and the beauty of the peninsula was on full display. The following week, we continued with outdoor activities. On Monday, we walked along the mole and the spit at Aramoana. There wasn't much wildlife but we saw some seals at the end of the mole. The cooler weather demanded a hot drink at the historic Carey's Bay Hotel. The rain came and went, and we drove around Back Beach, then back over the high road. They were all keen to walk up our famous Baldwin Street so off we set.Tuesday morning, we walked end-to-end of Tomahawk Beach. It is another magnificent spot and we met lots of people walking their dogs. After that, we went to my house where we did some baking. We made lollie cake and lemonade scones, and had some mini pavlovas. The standout favourite was the warm scones with generous toppings of butter and cream! Our last outing was to one of my favourite spots, Tunnel Beach. I have never been disappointed going there and I love taking visitors here. The students were in awe of the outstanding views, and they enjoyed taking time to sit by themselves and just enjoy the location and sounds of nature. The walk back up to the car park is always a bit arduous but the thought of getting a yummy ice cream inspired them. The last stop was Rob Roy Dairy where after some hard decision-making they savoured their delectable ice cream. The group of students were fantastic and they appreciated all the places we went and the outstanding sites we have around our city. They should return to their home countries with some splendid memories.
