Mavora Lakes Camp
Epic adventures were had at the Mavora Lakes camp, more commonly known as Caples 2.0 by the fortunate students who gained the experience.
Even though nearly every plan was forced to change and we would’ve ended up at Plan Z by the end of our camp if we’d been counting, this camp was a truly remarkable moment which will be remembered for the rest of my life.
From walking through puddles and streams to jumping over them, this activity was similar to the atmosphere and weather at Mavora Lakes. As well as being eaten alive by mosquitos, putting on wet shoes for yet another walk and freezing in the lake by choice, there were many many highlights to our camp.
My favorite experience was walking the Kiwiburn track, along with many others. We did this loop the day after our arrival. It was just like a long walking obstacle course because of all the stream crossings, tussock hopping, slippery mud patches, and scrambling over fallen trees throughout the loop. We stopped at a rough mid-way point at the hut for lunch where everyone ate delicious wraps pre-made from the morning. Mostly, I liked this walk because of all the adventure behind it and interesting parts we came across including the one person swingbridge at the start and finish.
Another moment which was a highlight for most, was going for a ride on spider bikes at Te Anau on the last day. This was accompanied with a flat tyre and far too many trips around the roundabout than necessary. As we split into groups and pedaled through town, the other half of this camp did a mini golf course at the same site before switching around. Both events were super enjoyable and were a great benefit of changing yet another plan!
Overall, Mavora Lakes was an amazing camp full of adventures where everyone who went made epic moments to be remembered for the rest of their lives. I’m so glad I chose this camp because evening games, roasting marshmallows by the fire for smores, scavenger hunts, and talent shows thrown at you is just so much fun!
