Maatangi Whenua - Year 11 Regional Geography Competition

Meg Sayers, Year 11 —

On Wednesday, I, along with five others, competed in the Otago Year 11 Geography Quiz.

Teams travelled from as far as Alexandra and Oamaru to make up the 16 teams of three students competing. Otago Girls Team 1 consisting of Jemma Bezuidenhout, Ashleigh Allum and Paige Van Gorp placed 9th and Otago Girls' Team 2 consisting of Jess Tyrrell, Ella Gomez and Meg Sayers placed 8th overall. The competition was well run and involved completing six different geographic activities to gain points. Some of the activities included making play dough sculptures signifying geographic concepts, matching countries flags, land mass and capitals together as well as identifying natural and cultural features on topographic maps and more. The competition was tough but all of the teams involved showed sportsmanship and enjoyment which resulted in us having a really fun time while gaining knowledge and skills useful for Geography. We also learnt about what Geography could offer us in the future in terms of jobs. Overall, I would recommend taking up the opportunity to be involved in such event as the experience was really good. The teams and students from Otago Girls' also showed their skills and performed very well while enjoying the afternoon.
