Japanese Speech contest

Ms B Thomson, TIC Japanese —

On Tuesday evening Tamzin Fenton-Todd, Lisa Lokman and Emily Lokman participated in the annual Dunedin Otaru Speech Competition. This year the event was held by zoom, with some extra guests from the Otaru City Council, and the Embassy of Japan. The students first presented a speech in Japanese, and then had a question and answer session with the three judges in Japanese. Despite nerves, all three students presented some really interesting speeches on about tips when visiting an onsen, their pet bird, and traditional Ainu culture. The level of language among all of the students from four different high schools was very high.

In the alternative category - Lisa Lokman gained gold, Emily Lokman gained Silver

In the senior category - Tamzin Fenton-Todd gained silver.

Well done to all three students for their courage in putting their language skills out there and taking part.
