Health and Physical Education Term Two

Mrs M Clements, HOD Physical Education —

He oranga ngākau, he pikinga waiora

Positive feelings in your heart will enhance your sense of self-worth

We see movement as a critical part of developing and sustaining student wellbeing. With this in mind, the theme for Term Two in Junior Health and Physical Education is ‘move to improve’. Students will experience a variety of different movement related activities and understand how this can support their physical, spiritual, emotional and social health both now and for their future. Students have completed baseline testing of various fitness components and are now setting goals to aim towards. Please support and encourage your tamariki to be active, to eat and drink well and to get plenty of quality sleep.

Senior Physical Education students are learning about the functionality of the human body and how it moves. This includes the structure of the body, physiological responses to exercise, bio-mechanical principles such as Force summation and Newton’s laws of motion. This theoretical knowledge is applied to learning performance skills such as badminton, volleyball or turbo touch.

Our Year 11 Physical Education and Health class are delving into their first dedicated health topic and are learning about strategies that promote positive sexuality for a diverse variety of people in society. This requires students to think critically about a range of issues and have an understanding of what wellbeing means for themselves and others in our community.

Outdoor Education classes have taken their learning into Te Taiao by enjoying their local environment on their mountain bikes or by foot. It is wonderful to see students enjoy the freedom of nature and enjoy the fresh air as they whizz along the tracks at Jubilee Park on their bikes or even creating mounds of leaves and throwing them at each other at Arthur Street Park. These classes are looking forward to several trips that were delayed due to Covid during Term One. I am sure they will be worth the wait and more.

Finally, well done to the majority of students who continually do the right thing by wearing their correct PE uniform, participate with a positive attitude and demonstrate respect for themselves and others. We truly do appreciate your efforts.
