NCEA, Subject Selection Evening and University Scholarships Update

Ms K Dick, Assistant Principal —

As we close Term Two, it is an important time for students to reflect with their parents/ whanau about their progress in NCEA and to work out what they need to do for the rest of the year to achieve success. This is especially important in Year 12 as grades count for applying for university and other study scholarships next year. For Year 13 students, you should be looking at deadlines and be putting your applications together now. The link is here

It is also important to reflect on wellbeing and study-life balance at this time. Studying hard is not mutually exclusive of wellbeing and in fact when we are at our busiest we are often at our best and feel our best. Make sure you get some rest over the two-week break and consider as you look towards Term Three, a way to organise your learning and revision. Building a study timetable with scheduled time for exercise and family activities is the best place to start. Take time over your holidays to put some things in order so that you can experience further and perhaps greater success in Term Three. The focus for students should switch from internal assessment to external assessment later next term. Students should prepare well for parallel exams which take place from 15 to 23 September and it is not too early to begin this preparation. See the Careers website Study Tips on the student landing page to get some tips on active and efficient studying.

It is always good to remember that if you are absent on the day an internal assessment is due for handing in, ask a family member to bring it to the office by 8.45am with the name of the subject teacher on the front.

If you are absent on the day an internal assessment is being held in the classroom you are not automatically entitled to catch up this assessment. For practical or field trip assessments there may be no catch up opportunity.

A catch up assessment would not be available if:

You went on holiday

You chose not to turn up (willful absence)

You need to supply evidence and a completed blue assessment form (available from the office). The blue assessment form needs to be given to your subject teacher who will pass it on to your Dean, who will in turn give it to Ms Dick for processing. You can find the online form on the School-Wide Classroom in the Classroom Materials section.

Look for “Classwork” then click on Assessment. You can complete the form online HERE

Each case is considered on its own merit.

Assessment dates may change so it is inadvisable to book holidays/activities during term time.

For those of you in Year 10, an evening for you and your whānau is on Wednesday 1 September to find out all about NCEA. This takes place on the same evening as our “Subject Selection Evening” - this will allow you to find out more about subjects you can take in the senior school, about career opportunities and how NCEA will look to you in 2022 and beyond.
