Physical Education Department

Ms S. McNatty, HOD Physical Education —

Several Year 9 Physical Education classes are focusing on risk management, through an aquatics module at Moana pool.

Whilst the objectives are to learn new skills to keep safe in the water, the assessment criteria is about following instructions and assisting others to achieve success. For example a very caring group of 9HST students; Chloe Jack, Hannah Forbes, and Kelsie Thorne spent some of their lunch hour after the swimming lesson to assist another student to gain the confidence to jump off the dive board through teaching and supporting her in the water. Well done girls.

The Year 10 classes are learning netball skills and disability awareness modules, focusing on the key interpersonal skills of working well in groups, caring for others and trying to learn about and understand others perspectives.

The Year 11 classes are enjoying a sport module called Tchoukbal in which they are developing their interpersonal skills in a competitive team environment in readiness for an inter-class competition. It is a novel experience for many in that there is no defence allowed so other tactics are required. There are good opportunities for leadership within this unit. They are also being assessed on their physical skills and level of participation.

Year 11 Outdoor Education classes are learning the skills of climbing and belaying in preparation for their rock climbing camp at Long Beach later this term. The Year 12 /13 Outdoor Education classes are currently learning how to maintain bikes and spending lots of class time mountain biking in preparation for their journeys later in the term. The girls are also enjoying their Friday last period surfing lessons with the Esplanade Surf School. With the help of the surf instructors and the good waves at St Clair beach all students have managed to stand on their board at some stage.

Our multilevel Sport class is completing a wonderful unit of work in basketball under the direction of Natalie Visger, Development Officer for Basketball Otago. They have made fabulous progress and are ready to challenge one another in a 3 v 3 mini-tournament.

In Year 12 the PE students are working with Kaikorai and Maori Hill primary schools, showing their leadership skills coaching the younger students. Whilst the Year 13 students are exploring different leadership styles as they teach our Year 10 classes fitness, ABL (Adventure Based Learning) and netball skills.

We are grateful to our senior students for stepping up as role models and sharing their enthusiasm and skills with the wider community and younger students.
