11Outdoor Education Tramp and Camp

Macy Woodason, Year 11 —

Last week, we loaded into the school vans early on Thursday morning and drove to Semple Road near the Silver Peaks to tackle our first tramp up to Pulpit Rock. We were soon all prepared to start the track with our heavy backpacks on. The group had a blast on the walk even though it was initially cold, thanks to some great conversations and our thermal clothing. We took a rest at Green Hill after a couple of hours of walking before continuing uphill and onwards to Pulpit Rock. The tracks were covered in mud and this made it more interesting with some of us slipping and sliding all over the place. This definitely made it the best and funniest part. Finally reaching the top, we were all eager to rest, refuel and enjoy some lunch. Returning down the hill was a lot easier, and in no time we were back and on the road towards our camping destination, Waiora Scout Camp.

On arrival, we set up our tents in a circle, making it conducive for late-night conversations. After we made dinner and cleaned the dishes, we all played a fantastic game of ‘Give us a clue’. This charades game was the most competitive I've ever played, involving lots of shouting, yelling, and laughing. After a quick game of mafia we called it a night and went to sleep, excited for the next day’s tramp.

The Raceman's tunnel track involved crossing creeks, jumping fences to avoid slips in the track, and climbing slippery, muddy hills. When we arrived at our morning tea spot, we were treated to a chocolate bar provided by our lovely parent volunteer, Matt. We were very grateful for this thoughtful gesture, which helped to increase our walking energy. After plenty of walking, we all made it to our lunch location and appreciated our lunch while sharing stories before heading off along the tunnel track. The tunnel was little, disappointing the groups' best efforts to get there, but we all went through it one by one while giggling and screaming. Our feet were cooled off as we crossed the river to end this great day hike. During the two-day tramps, everyone did well with their map reading, positivity and support for one another and leadership of the group.

After returning to base camp, we took down our tents and expressed our gratitude and appreciation. We also shared our highlights of these two wonderful days. The breathtaking view from the peak of Pulpit Rock and the charades game the previous evening were my highlights. There's no denying that everyone on this trip had a great time. There are so many chances to experience new and exciting things when participating in outdoor education. Along with giving you more self-confidence, it also rewards you with wonderful memories and new friendships. Many thanks to Ms Ward, Mrs Clements, Matt Woodason and Sylvie Watt for accompanying us on tramps and for organising a great couple of days.
