Health and Physical Education Term One
2022 has begun in a fun but challenging fashion for our health and physical education classes. Teachers and students are having to demonstrate flexibility and resilience as they are required to engage in physical activity outdoors which can be challenging given Dunedin’s inclement weather. It has been wonderful to see students embrace the challenges of wearing face masks whilst indoors and enjoy the freedom of taking them off to exercise when the sun is shining. Fingers crossed for more days like this.
Junior classes are working on developing their interpersonal skills through Ki o Rahi, Poi and striking games such as softball. Senior classes are also learning about interpersonal skills through coaching, playing in team sports and understanding the application of leadership styles to physical activity. Our outdoor education students have started the year learning basic rock climbing skills, abseiling and mountain biking. These classes are looking forward to the culmination of these units with overnight expeditions later in the term.
We would like to take the opportunity to remind students and caregivers of the following information:
Students participating in physical education are expected to wear our OGHS PE uniform including gym shoes suitable for exercise. This is to allow full participation in activities and ensure good hygiene practices are followed.
The fitness centre is open for all OGHS students from 7.00am-5.00pm Monday to Friday. We remind students to use equipment sensibly and safely and to wipe all equipment used with disinfectant and cloths provided.
Physical activity is a valuable way of improving physical and mental wellbeing. Enjoy what is left of the summer weather by getting out and exercising with your whanau and/or friends. It is also a great time to check in with your tamariki to see how they are getting on.
