Filming Club gets new equipment for live multicamera workflow

Rebecca Baxter, Year 9 —

In July this year, the MediaLab Filming Club received $8,000 in funding from Pub Charity. Our proposal aimed to design and implement a portable multi-camera/streaming station that can synchronise up to eight cameras for live editing.

We received the new equipment this week, most excitingly a Blackmagic switchboard and a new cinema camera, which are the brain of this ecosystem. Peter Eaton from Gravity Events led the technical design of the project and very kindly helped us set it up and show us how to use it.

During the session on Wednesday, we learnt how to switch between cameras and how the different buttons work. This will be a significant advancement for us, as the switchboard lets us switch cameras live, enabling us to get videos out much more quickly.

We are very thankful to have this new gear, as we know it will be beneficial for upcoming projects, such as recording our Prizegiving and Celebration, or producing better interviews.
