2019 NZCAF National Schools' Hip Hop Championships

Ashleigh Allum , Hip Hop co-ordinator —

Two of Otago Girls’ High School’s Hip Hop Crews have been busy choreographing and training for the NZCAF Hip Hop competitions over the last couple of months.

The two Hip Hop Crews competed in the Regional competition, held in the Dunedin Town Hall on  2 August. We were up against secondary schools from throughout Otago, who provided tough competition. However, with the hard work and dedication of both crews, we achieved incredible results. The crew Unflameable, (consisting of Allyssa Salvador, Ashleigh Allum, Bronwyn Tunster, Grace Smith, Penny Bowker-Napp, Sarah Wybrow, and Tamara Vial) placed first in the Regional competition, and the crew In-Denial (consisting of Caitlin McLellan, Courtney Henderson, Jamie Laing, Lillian McKenzie-Cornelius, Manaia Mihaka-George, Shaleena Oaten, Talia Greer and Tayla Koni - coached by Megan Muir), placed fifth. Both crews qualified for the National Competition, which was held in Queenstown, on 20 September. We competed against nine secondary schools from throughout New Zealand, and gained satisfying results. In-Denial placed eighth, and Unflameable placed fourth.

The competitions were amazing experiences, and it was awesome to be able to showcase how much time and effort went into the crews and their performances. We are very grateful to the people who supported both crews throughout the preparation and performance of this year’s Hip Hop competitions.
