Benefits of Exercise for Mental Health

Back in Motion —

One in six people aged 10 to 19 years old experience mental health conditions.

Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to mental health conditions due to physical, emotional and social changes faced during this time. Being physically active is a great way to treat mental health conditions and prevent them from developing.

While the physical benefits of exercise may be more obvious, it also has significant positive benefits for mental health conditions of stress, anxiety and depression. This is because exercise changes chemical levels in the brain, releases endorphins and lowers the level of stress hormones. Furthermore, exercise can improve self-esteem and lead to a better night’s sleep.

Being involved in sports or exercise you enjoy is the best way to stay motivated to exercise and build healthy habits from a young age.
