Tēnā koutou katoa

We invite you to our first Whānau Hui for 2018 on Monday 26 February from 5 to 6pm. We will have kai and kōrero. Come and celebrate our girls' flying start to 2018 with us in the school. Our Head Prefect Ella Rooney and our Kāhui Kōrero (Māori Student Council) leaders will open the hui. All welcome.

Look out for our new Facebook page: OGHS Te Whānau Ngākau Aroha at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1810221012384403/ and sign up for our OGHS school app to receive updates.

Kāhui Kōrero Māori student council

The Māori student council has been operating officially since last year and is made up of students from each year level. Students are versed in leadership skills, karakia, whakatauki, waiata and how to chair meetings. The Council aims to lift the profile of things Māori and to raise Māori achievement through mentoring and homework groups. This year brings the introduction of the new school haka. There are exciting days ahead.

This years focus is on Nationals which will be held in Palmerston North from June 29 until July 7. Returning as head tutor is Te Rina Keogh and while we lose Kaharau Keogh this year we are very lucky to welcome Thomas Arepo Morgan who will tutor the boys. The kaupapa will be based around the Kai Tahu iwi and we will be telling their stories through song and haka. It will be intensive but we are determined to do well.

Mini book review – Gabby Liddell

Aotearoa – the story of New Zealand by Gavin Bishop

Kia ora, I read about this book and saw some photos of Gavin Bishop on the internet. Whaea Joe got the book out of the school library to share with her Social Studies class and they liked it so much that she bought her own copy. Come and read it in K17. It’s really a cool way to tell our story. It’s full of great artwork too. There is a copy available in the library for borrowing.
