Social Sciences
2016 has been a very successful and enjoyable year within the Social Sciences department. There has been a lot of exciting events, activities and learning going on.
Our camps to Borland Lodge for Year 12 Geography, Aoraki/Mount Cook
for Year 11 Geography, Puketeraiki Marae and the Ecosanctuary for Year 10 Social
Studies and the various local trips were all successful and highlighted the
value of this real life learning to our students. Thank you to all the staff
for their commitment to these trips out and about.
Well done to all those girls who attended various Social Sciences competitions that were held around the region and nationally. We would like to particularly say congratulations to the girls who were placed in the Future Historians Award competition. Well done.
In the junior school students have been working hard on a variety of different topics throughout the year. The topics that we cover range from History, Geography and Economics all the way through to social responsibility and cyber safety. We also have a range of contexts which the girls cover from local and personal contexts all the way through to global topics and countries. One of the most important changes with the way we work has been with the introduction of BYOD at Year 9. This has allowed a lot of different and exciting ways of teaching and learning to take place. At the senior level students have been using digital technology to access extra resources and use it as an extension tool. The Geography department has also trialled digital examinations at Level 1 to get an insight to what this might look like in the future.
Finally thank you to all the staff and students for a fantastic year. Good luck to all the seniors for their NCEA results. Have a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to seeing you all in 2017.
