Literacy and Numeracy Standards
As you may be aware, we are offering our Year 10s the opportunity to try the Literacy and Numeracy Standards in Weeks 4 and 5. Last year, NZQA made changes to NCEA so that now, students must pass 10 literacy credits (5 reading and 5 writing) and 10 numeracy credits to achieve all NCEA levels. We are giving our Year 10s the ability to see what the tests are like and there will be a further opportunity in September.
There are now two ways students can achieve the co-requisites and page 4 of this document outlines these in more detail. It also has some examples of the test that you might like to look at.
In 2024, most of our Year 10 students attempted the new standalone literacy and numeracy assessment tasks, known as Common Assessment Activities (CAAs). Some have met the required standard and some have not. To see if your child has passed you can check their results on the Helix portal under their results sections. Year 11 students should know if they have passed already or not, and it would pay to have a discussion with them about this.
In week 4 and 5 of this term, we are providing all current Year 11 students with the opportunity to reattempt these exams if they previously did not pass or were not entered in 2024. Senior OGHS students new to New Zealand are also being given the opportunity to sit these tests. Specific testing dates can be found below
We encourage every student who is sitting these tests to arrive early on the days below:
Year 10 Numeracy CAA - Monday 19 May.
Year 10 Reading CAA - Wednesday 21 May
Numeracy CAA (for seniors) - Wednesday 21 May
Writing CAA for Year 10 and senior students who need the co-requisite - Monday 26 May
Catch-up day for any of the CAAs - Friday 30 May
