Library Day

Jane Smallfield —

The 80th OGHS library day was held on 13 June.

The first library day in 1938 resulted in 20 books being added to the school library – this year over 300 were given to the library.  I would particularly like to acknowledge the School Council who donated $400 of books, the Board of Trustees who donated $500, and the PTSA who gave $1500 to buy library resources for our school library.
Form classes and various departments and school groups also donated books and I appreciate the enthusiasm you showed for this.
Our guest speaker this year was ex-girl Millie Lovelock, who recently completed her Masters with distinction basing it on the group One Direction. She gave an a great speech on the connections made within Libraries and the importance of them even in a digital age.
Thank you to all those that entered the various competitions - the results were:

Best costume: Shanae Hollander-Allan and Genevieve Scott

Bookface competition: Jenna Knarston, Rachel Gerson, Mridula Mannan, Isabelle Dalley

Colouring Competion: 1st Tamika  Ashbrook, 2nd Sophie Sowerby and 3rd Sara Taha

Love and Breakup letters to the Library:

1st Rachel O'Kane with the following letter:

My Dearest Library

I have found the need to express my emotions towards you and your input in our relationship. I have tried for 18 months now to feel something but I feel like I am fighting a losing battle with you. The amount of girls I have to share with you makes me feel like I am on the Bachelor but you are not Art Green, you are Jordon and I don't want to be with a Jordan, Whenever I come to you for advice and information, you push me away, not allowing me to read your pages, instead letting the other contestants on this show read them instead. We have had some really ka pai times, like the time we travelled to India with Saroo but I feel like I can never find and you and whenever I try you seem lost amongst the Bachelorettes. You are too reserved and you won't give me what I need in this relationship.

After all of this I can see clearly now and it is my final decision to not accept your rose.

2nd Georgia Warren:

Dearest Library

My love for your contents is unmeasurable

Light sunshine radiates off your delicate walls and onto my shelf.

Everyday we meet in the same place, same time, with the same goal.

The warmth you hold, can heat up the coldest day,

Your sweet aroma of books, old and new tickles my binding in welcome

Soft bodies absorbed into the paperback they hold, indulging in the experience their book has to offer

But the experience I love, is sitting in the loving embrace of your walls,

In my own world of imagination, creativity, and thought

I love you library

- A special book.

Dear Otago Girls Library

You've let others in before me and others after

But I don't care

I love you

The stories you tell are legendary

The poets you quote are dreamy

You are filled with knowledge that I can't fathom

You are open to me when others are closed

You are my one and only

My little library

Take care my darling

I shall see you soon.
