McKellar Hut

Dr W. Martin, English —

A group of seventeen girls travelled with camp leader Ms McNatty and support staff Dr Martin and Ms Chapman to Te Anau to tramp on the Kepler Track and visit Milford Sound. The weather was fine early in the week for two nights of idyllic camping at Brod Bay, which provided picturesque sunsets and marshmallows roasted on the fire. The walk up to Luxmore Hut was a challenge for all, but it was met with enthusiasm and a willingness to persevere until reaching the top. The group stayed at Homer Hut in Fjordland on the third night to escape the torrential rain; however, one of the vans did get bogged in the river and needed to be towed out by a passing traveller enigmatically named "Sasha". The cruise on Milford Sound was a highlight, with the girls enjoying the rollercoaster ride at the front of the boat, as it careened into the oncoming waves. The girls rose to the challenge of staying steadfast under the waterfalls coming off the rock, as the tour guide Turgut showered them with water. The night at Te Anau at "Steamers" Backpackers provided rest and relaxation with lasagne and ice-cream, before the trip home to Dunedin on the Friday. Well done to all girls and staff for a fun and rewarding camp!
