Puketeraki Marae, Karitane

Ms T. Munro, Assistant HOD Social Sciences —

As part of the Social Studies First Peoples unit all Year 10 students have an overnight stay on a Marae with their class.

This is a fantastic experience for our students and a great journey of discovery about people and place in a local environment.

To begin our journey we visit the Orokonui Ecosanctuary. Here we got the opportunity to reconnect with nature by having guided walks through the beautiful native New Zealand forest and observe rare native birds in their habitats. We think about and discuss the concept of Kaitiakitaka - looking after our environment and its treasures for future generations.

The next stage of our journey took us to Puketeraki Marae where we were warmly welcomed by local runaka. We then enjoyed a beautiful walk to Huriawa Peninsula Pa site where we learnt about the history of the people of the area.

In the evening we shared our mihi mihi, performed skits and listened to stories into the night. The following morning we had workshops which included mau rakau, flax weaving, waiata and learnt the history behind the carvings of Puketeraki. Just before lunch we made preparations for the powhiri, to welcome the next classes onto the Marae.

To conclude our journey we reluctantly said goodbye to Karitane and Puketeraki Marae. A big thanks to all the fantastic people who made us so welcome at their special place. This journey has given us fond memories of both people and place within an unique and beautiful environment.
