Business Mentoring at Otago Girls

Mr D Trickey, Business Studies —

The Year 13 Business students were treated this week to a visit from Polson and Higgs business advisors David Young and Jackson Toms. Polson and Higgs have been a massive supporter of the Young Enterprise over a number of years and though many of our students have visited their offices it was a first to get them in the room.

Jackson Tomm a recent Otago University graduate and now an accountant at Polson and Higgs guided his team to the national finals in 2019 with their brand Oak Cologne. Jackson talked about his journey and the pathway into business the skills developed through the Young Enterprise Program and how they translate into work-ready skills.

With many of our Year 13 teams starting to get products on the Market, they were amazed to see how far the teams have come.

Validation Success: Congratulations to Energiza and CEO Ema Takataka for leading her team to 2nd in the region for challenge one of the Young Enterprise competition. The first part of the competition has teams take their prototype or MVP (minimum Viable Product) out of the building to get genuine feedback from their target market. The feedback they received was:"Well done on getting out of the building in 2 locations and testing and surveying a wide range of your target market. Great evidence and enjoyed seeing the graphs as part of your learnings." The team received $75 in start up funding to further develop their product.

In a tight competition Oasis Hair care and Pamper Princess of Year 12 were also highly commended and took away $25 each. Their videos are below.

The next steps for the teams is to get ready for their business pitches later in the term as well as getting their first products ready for sale.
