12 Science – Geology Fieldtrip
Brighton and the Pyramids Rock!
And that’s what
we discovered as we travelled from Brighton down the Otago Peninsula, looking
at the volcanic history and uplift around Dunedin. The schist at Brighton is
150 million years old and the Pyramids at Victory Beach were created in the
first volcanic stage in Dunedin 13 million years ago. The Pyramids are a great example of columnar
jointing of basalt which can also be seen at the Organ Pipes on Mt Cargill. We definitely recommend getting out and discovering Dunedin Rocks!
Thanks to Mr Hurtado-Stuart and Dr Phillips for accompanying us.
