Year 13 Biology

Miss W Dunn, TIC Biology —

Yesterday the Year 13 Biologists headed down the Otago Peninsula to visit both the Albatross Colony and the Marine Science Centre. Both locations provide great opportunities to reinforce the theory covered in the classroom about animal behaviour. Six chicks could be seen from the observatory and our students asked great questions of the staff about the birds and their behaviours and life cycle. At the Marine Science Centre various small investigations were carried out and lots of weird and wonderful creatures were observed: seahorses, octopus, cockles infested with parasites, giant starfish and fish that change from female to male! A number of people were challenged by the proximity to some of the creatures and some took on the challenge to touch them in the touch tanks. A great day out and everyone will remember at least some of the behaviours observed.
