Live stream with the Antarctica Hot Water Drilling Team

Mrs C Beaman, Science —

Sixty super keen Otago Girls' students attended a live stream with scientists and researchers in Antarctica last week at the Otago Museum. Tere Tipako Tio: Rapid Extensive Antarctic Ice Sampling is a project looking into the best methods for sampling the ice shelves in Antarctica, testing new drilling technologies using hot water drills. Jessica and Morgan linked with us 5 km from Scott Base using the star link satellite and it was incredible to have no time delay! They're living and sleeping on the North McMurdo ice shelf in containers and in canvas tents at minus 20 degrees. They were wonderful to talk to and it was really interesting to learn about their tertiary education and how it led them to where they are now. They shared with us their experience in Antarctica so far and how the drilling research will help to understand the effect of Climate Change on the Antarctic ice shelves. Thanks so much to the Otago Museum for inviting us to link in.
