Rugby

Mr D. Trickey, TIC Sport —

The Under 15 rugby 10's team enjoyed a feast of rugby as part of the Highlanders regional tournament in Gore.

The girls faced stiff and varied competition with 13 teams competing from across Otago and Southland. The girls were watched by the Black Ferns who were wowed by some of the skills on display. Unbeaten and having not conceded a try the team went into a semi-final against James Hargest. The girls won the semi-final comfortably but due to the sheer amount of games, fatigue and injury crept in. The final was against St Hilda's and the tired legs and expansive play from St Hilda's left Otago Girls' floundering somewhat. The St Hilda's side showed expertise in snaffling the ball from the ruck and scored a number of tries through their  winger. The girls finished on a high though with Maryangel Fretton smashing over the line to score in the dying moment of the game. It is great to see the girls, many of whom are new to rugby, compete at this level and to have 158 girls all enjoying the game on a sunny day in Gore is a win for us all. I look forward to seeing how these girls go as some transition into the 1st XV and others develop in the Under 15s for another year.
