Celebration

Ms K. Dick, HOD English —

What an extraordinary week we have had in the cultural life of OGHS.

Last week we enjoyed a spectacular night of original writing and performances at Cultural Blues and this week we have enjoyed more outstanding performances at our annual Celebration event at Knox Church.

We began rehearsing last term with Ms Dick and Mr Shields and finished with a flourish on Tuesday night. Celebration is an evening of music, dance, and literature which celebrates all that we are as a school community. This year our theme was “Talk to Me”, which brought together songs from the 21st century that our girls born at the turn of the century have enjoyed with songs that those who were ‘young’ in the 1980s will well remember. We aimed to capture the connection across generations with readings from such notable people as our own Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern and an inspirational Michelle Obama. The big songs of the night came in the form of “Africa” by Toto and “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. We have an extraordinary depth of talent in our young women from the wonderful Celebration Band to the fabulous individual and group items from across the school. We are also lucky to have such talent on staff in the form of Mr  Shields, Dr Martin and Mrs Gordon who bring a wide range of styles and individual accomplishments to the night.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in our wonderful evening and thank you to the superb performers who contributed items and supported us in making our overall sound quite magical.
