Year 13 Biology

Miss W Dunn, TIC Biology —

Year 13 Biology took advantage of the exam season down at the University to use the labs while they were free.

So what did we do? At a basic level, Scientists had already inserted some "Human DNA" into bacterial DNA (called a plasmid). The students then "undo" this process by using restriction enzymes to cut the DNA up. Of course this is so small we can't see it with the naked eye. Many copies of the plasmid are involved and they are dyed. This means that we can "see" the clumps of DNA when it is separated out by the second process - Gel Electrophoresis. These techniques are widely used in laboratories. A big thank you to everyone for taking part including all of the staff and University students for making the session possible.
