On occasion, the University of Otago runs a wānanga for junior Māori students from various schools. We were fortunate to be offered places this year and jumped at the opportunity. Eight students attended with the first two days and nights at Araiteuru Marae and the last day at Otago University Campus where we got to visit various sections of the Chemistry and Physics departments – a privilege for secondary school students.

During the wānanga students focused on a number of practicals around light and lasers. In the kīhini they made chemical dyes to mimic the natural indigo dyes from plants once used to dye jeans. Activities related to the study of the brain and behaviour (Psychology) wrapped up the Science Kaupapa. Mahi toi saw groups produce art and a skit around Matariki, a waiata was learned and there were many games.

Exposing our students to these disciplines highlights accessible science careers. The wānanga was run by staff and senior University students who did a wonderful job weaving all the aspects together into a fun and educational experience.
