Astronomers Without Borders Astropoetry International Poetry Competition

Ms R. Taigel, Deputy Principal —

We are incredibly proud of the following OGHS students who gained placings and an honourable mention in the Astronomers Without Borders Astropoetry International Poetry Competition this month.

First Prize went to Elsa Neuman in Year 11. Second Prize went to Muychheng Oeng in Year 12, and Maddie Millhouse in Year 10 received an honourable mention. You can read their amazing poetry by clicking on the following link: http://bit.ly/2sREe5M

Elsa Neuman is a year 11 and enjoys competing in hockey and cross country. In her spare time, she likes running on the beach with her dog and reading.

Muychheng Oeng was born in Cambodia and is currently living in Dunedin. She loves to write when she is alone in her room. She enjoys listening to other people speak and taking notes of memorable moments. Her favorite poets are William Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth I. What she admires most about their poems are the way sentences are constructed and the use of old English words which make her think that every single thing has its meaning.

Maddie Millhouse is a New Zealand high school student who was born in Auckland but raised in New Zealand. Maddie says her inspiration meter is usually at zero, but it is often activated by the challenge of a competition. In terms of general writing influences, hers probably lean towards authors like Erin Hunter and James Patterson among several others.
