FIND YOUR FUTURE!

Careers week for 2017 was an exciting week and began with the Tertiary Open Day on Monday. Year 11 and Year 13 students spent a great day visiting a range of presentations and displays at the university and polytechnic. This was particularly helpful to our Year 13 students who are at the place in their studies where they need to seriously consider their next steps beyond school - be it further study, gaining employment or taking a gap year. The feedback from the Year 13 students has been very positive with new ideas gained and important information about university and polytechnic studies gathered.

YEAR 11 CAREERS WEEK

Our Year 11 students used an online scavenger hunt to explore the possibilities available to them for their life beyond school. They had a range of activities which they needed to complete, such as visit the university library, explore the Hub (Polytech) and Link (University) displays to find out information and record this information using their devices. All students attended at least two presentations or lectures. The Year 11’s found this a really valuable experience and many have reported back that they now know what they want to do when they leave school.

On Tuesday we had a very full programme. H & J Smith talked to students about appropriate dress and should they choose to wear it, makeup which was suitable for an interview situation. We then had presentations from Garth Hassall (Malcam Trust) about being “work ready”, Kim Cox (Chamber of Commerce) shared about professional CV preparation and presentation, Steven Adam and Kylie Edwards (SDHB) discussed job interviews, good/bad CVs and our online presence and why this was important when applying for jobs. Students got to find out their personality type using a basic Myers Briggs indicator which was a lot of fun and very revealing. The final guest speaker was Heidi Renata from Innov8HQ who spoke about “Chicks in Tech”. This was really inspiring for all our students and I know that Heidi has been emailed by a number of our girls since.
