Vaping and Phones
Mrs Bridget Davidson, Tumuaki~Principal - January 23, 2025
Recent research has shown the dangers of vaping for young people, especially on respiratory lung functioning. We have also noted a correlation at school amongst a small number of students where leaving class to go to the bathroom during class results in phone use and for some, vaping offences. We are aware of a small number of students who for health reasons need to use phones for diabetes management or take more frequent bathroom visits and we will be keeping a register of these. Please email the office or their year level Dean if your child or children fall into this category and we will let their teachers know.
If your child does experience phone or vaping addiction - or both - we have people who can assist, including referral to our confidential health nurse service. Vaping and more recently phones, are not permitted in school at all. Please also be aware that energy drinks are not permitted. Toilet breaks should be at interval and lunch breaks, and if necessary, between classes. We will be doing significant work on this in the coming months and we look forward to new bathroom facilities coming in S block. I recommend watching the Netflix series: ‘Big Vape’ which provides startling context for what society is dealing with and how it has evolved.
