13 Bio trip to Otago University’s Biochem department

Miss W. Dunn, TIC Biology —

In Biology we are exploring the manipulation of DNA for the benefit of humans – in particular producing better quality or higher yielding food supplies and saving endangered species.

The practical components we carry out down at the University greatly enhance the understanding of the students and we refer back to this constantly. The students were able to insert a section of “human” DNA into some bacterial DNA in a prepared lab the Biochem department runs for visiting schools. The girls relished the opportunity to do some hands on work and the chance to hear about the work the post graduate students were doing using the same techniques we were using in the lab.
