Pasifika Voices Shine at Speech Competition

Mrs V Millar, Dean of Pasifika Students —

On Wednesday, 14th August, the Pasifika Voices Speech Competition was a platform where our students showcased not only their oratory skills but also their deep connection to their cultural heritage. The event was a resounding success, with Frances Tuigamala and Tanya Moeono emerging as standout performers.

Frances Tuigamala captivated the audience and judges alike, securing 1st place in the junior section with her insightful speech on "Preserving Pasifika Cultural Identity in a Globalized World." Frances eloquently explored how Pasifika communities strive to maintain their rich cultural heritage and traditions amidst the sweeping tides of globalization and modernization. She highlighted the crucial role that language, art, music, and storytelling play in preserving Pasifika identity, while also acknowledging the challenges and opportunities that arise from cultural exchange.

In the senior section, Tanya Moeono earned 2nd place with her thought-provoking speech on "The Rich Tapestry of Pasifika Contributions: Building Bridges, Fostering Understanding." Tanya delved into the diverse and significant ways in which Pasifika communities have enriched society, from their contributions in the arts, sports, education, and healthcare, to their efforts in environmental conservation. She emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating these contributions to promote inclusivity, diversity, and mutual understanding in our increasingly interconnected world.

Both Frances and Tanya presented with such poise and grace, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. We are extremely proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing how they will continue to use their voices to inspire and lead in the future.

Frances' speech:

Preserving the Pasifika Culture in a Globalised World

Ladies and gentlemen, brothers and sisters.

Today, I stand before you a proud Samoan girl, representing Pasifika culture, a precious pearl. From distant islands, across vast oceans we span, our identities rooted deep in language, art, music’s grand plan.

Language stands as a pillar of our identity. Our languages carry the stories of our ancestors, the wisdom of our elders, and the essence of who we are Pasifika peoples. In the face of globalized pressures, it is crucial that we continue to teach and pass on our languages to future generations. English may be a universal language, but our own languages are the bedrock of our cultural continuity.

Art and music, rhythms echoing through time, stories of struggle, triumph, painted in rhyme. They speak of our journeys, our ancestors’ plight, guiding us forward, in the darkest of night.

As a Samoan girl, Samoan dance holds profound significance in my life. It connects me deeply to my cultural roots, offering a tangible link to my heritage and identity. Through the graceful movements and rhythmic beats, I not only express myself but also honour the traditions passed down through generations, Samoan dance embodies stories of our ancestors, their struggles, triumph, and values, serving as a vibrant tapestry of our collective history. It instils in me a sense of pride and belonging, fostering a profound appreciation for the richness of Samoan culture. Beyond its artistic beauty, Samoan dance is a testament to resilience and community, embodying values that resonate within me as a Samoan girl.

In a globalized world, our challenge is clear, to preserve and celebrate, hold our culture dear. Global exchanges, opportunities shine bright, yet dangers lurk dilution threatens our light.

Diaspora’s embrace, a double-edged sword, expanding horizons, yet fracturing our chord. Stereotypes loom, misconceptions abound but our resilience, our pride continue to astound.

We face biases, unfairness, and unjust favours, yet our voices rise, as bold as ocean’s savors. We demand recognition, not just token nods, but a place at the table, equal to the odds.

For me, Samoan identity is a flame that burns strong, honouring ancestors’ legacy, where I belong. Navigating integration without losing my way, embracing the past, while shaping today.

So, as we navigate this globalized world let us stand together, proud of our heritage, steadfast in our traditions, and resilience in the face of adversity. Let us educate, advocate, and elevate our Pasifika cultural identity, ensuring that our legacy endures for generations to come.

Because our languages, our arts, our dances, and our stories are not just fragments of our past, they are the beating heart of our presents and the foundation of our future.

Thank you for your ear, for listening to our story, our journey so dear. Let’s keep our voices strong, our Pasifika pride, forever shining brightly across the world wide.

Fa’afetai tele lava for your time.
