The Female Athlete Triad

Are you a young sporty female?......If so this article is worth a read to make the most of your sporting career and avoid long-term health issues associated with the condition.

The female athlete triad is a common occurrence in teenage sporting females. It involves disordered eating, menstrual irregularity, or low bone mass due to over training without adequate fuel intake. In the long term it can lead to osteoporosis; decreased bone strength and bone density that increases the risk of fractures.

If you are worried you fall under the triad, symptoms to look out for are; fatigue, irregular periods and disordered eating patterns.

If you think you may fall under the heading of ‘The Female Athlete Triad’ it is important you discuss it with someone such as your coach, parents, GP, physiotherapist, dietitian or all of the above.
