A visit from Dame Silvia Cartwright

Chihiro Smithies and Ashling Coffey —

On Friday last week, ex-Otago Girls’ student and former Governor General Dame Silvia Cartwright came to give a speech at assembly. She also had a morning tea with some of us students so we could ask some questions and this was then followed by an interview with the film club.

In assembly, she spoke of her childhood, of her time at Otago Girls’, and about her amazing career. It was very interesting to hear of her path and how she was inspired to follow it.  Her whole talk was truly inspiring, and she has a brilliant sense of humour.

During the morning tea, we were able to ask her our more in-depth questions about her life and career. It was so fascinating to listen about her life, as well as to hear her opinions on more recent happenings, like AI and the downward trend of feminism.

She then had an interview run by the school’s very own film club, where she answered even more questions on camera, and it was yet again, so cool to hear about her story and her thoughts and opinions.

It was such a great experience, we learnt so much, and we were super lucky that she could visit and speak with us. Thank you Dame Silvia!!
