10NCH Rock Climbing and Kayaking

Asya Ahmadasri, Year 10 —

10NCH was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to go rock climbing and kayaking with some Polytechnic students. We were split into two groups, with one choosing to go kayaking, and the other choosing to go rock climbing.

I was one of the few students to go rock climbing. At first I was extremely nervous, but that faded away as soon as I reached the top of the rock. I remember feeling a wave of accomplishment wash over me as the sun glared at me from above.

To be completely honest, I wasn’t really too keen on going rock climbing, but by the end of the day feeling all tired and sweaty, I was glad I gave it a go. I had a lot of fun and my perspective on rock climbing changed after that. I know I wasn’t the only one who felt like that too. My group all laughed together as we went abseiling and cheered each other on. It was a great time, and I remembered having the time of my life.

The thought of climbing big heights never really appealed to me. I always thought I wouldn’t like it since I had a fear of heights, but I was proven wrong as I had one of the best days of my life.

The other group went kayaking. It was windy, and the water was ice cold, but the sun was out, and they were all way too excited to really care. My classmates were all excited, some were new to kayaking, and were extremely nervous. But that didn’t stop them from giving it a go. After all, you never know unless you try right?

By the end of the day, everyone was soaking wet and laughing with joy. They all had a blast, especially the first timers. They learnt new things, and played fun friendly games on the water. The highlight of the day was probably trying to set all the kayaks in a line, and try not to float away. It proved to be harder than expected, but who doesn’t like a good challenge?

Time flew by quickly for both groups, and it wasn’t long until we had to bid farewell to the Polytech students, and wish them luck for their upcoming exams. 10NCH had an amazing time with them, they were all very kind and helpful. The Polytech students taught us many things and 10NCH is extremely grateful for the opportunity to join them on this experience.

We also can’t forget about Mrs Chapman, Mrs McNatty, and Mr Hurtado-Stuart who participated on this trip. It was really cool seeing Mrs Chapman rock climbing with us. They all made sure we were safe and had a good time, which 10NCH is also extremely grateful for.

If someone were to ask me whether or not I’d do this again, I’d say ‘Definitely!’ This was an amazing experience and I’m more than keen for another round. I’m sure 10NCH could say the same as well.
