Sailing

Mr K Hurtado-Stuart, TIC Sailing —

Over the Holidays 3 of our sailors Tessa Hinch, Rose Anderson and Olivia Bonner travelled to Rarotonga for the NZTSA winter training regatta. Over the ten days, they sailed in the Muri Lagoon in two different boat classes. In the first half, they sailed in traditional Vaka boats in combined teams from around New Zealand. A combined South Island team which included Tessa Hinch won the Sean Dickey memorial trophy. Later in the trip, they sailed sunbursts, this gave them a chance to learn team sailing skills that they can use back in the 420 boats they race in NZ. Ross Sutherland who ran the camp taught the group the importance of teamwork, boat maintenance and communication. Along with sailing the group was lucky enough to go on the island walk, market and explore snorkelling spots.

Sailing is a summer sport at school and will start up and running again later this term. Anyone is welcome to come along a give it a go.
