Year 9 Scholarship and Prefect Evening

Ms K Dick, Deputy Principal —

We had a wonderful night in the hall on Monday celebrating our 2022 Year 9 Board Scholarships. Not only did we acknowledge our talented Year 9s, but we also celebrated with our prefects in Year 13 and their whānau. The tuakana–teina relationship, an integral part of traditional Māori society, provides a model for buddy systems. An older or more expert tuakana (brother, sister or cousin) helps and guides a younger or less expert teina (originally a younger sibling or cousin of the same gender). In a learning environment that recognises the value of ako, the tuakana–teina roles may be reversed at any time. In the spirit of this, our prefects spoke of their experiences at OGHS but also of their challenges and successes and how that success came about. They provided a guide through their humour and their wisdom and each Year recipient of the scholarship received a jar of wisdom with personal notes from the prefects to inspire and empower our ākonga as they meet each challenge and dream. It was particularly special to meet with our families again after over two years of absence. We thank all the staff who helped to make this such a special occasion and a warm and special thank you, in particular, to Mrs. Watt for her wonderful kai which kept us nourished on a cold winter's night.
