Sports Day 2017

Becky Paterson and Meg Ballanytne, Sports Prefects —

On February 17 we held our annual Sports Day at the Caledonian Ground, Logan Park. The day kicked off with the march past where each house went head to head chanting their way around the track with their amazing costumes on.

The sounds of each house chanting filled the stadium and began the house rivalries. This years house themes were Allan’s Arrest, Benjamin’s Barnyard, Cruickshank’s Christmas and Williams Wizard of Oz.

Along with the tabloid events, which students participated in their house year levels, there were lots of competitive events throughout the day. Soon after the march past the events commenced and we started with the 1500m. In Year 9 Becky de la Harpe broke the record for 1500m with a time of 05:45.91min and Rebekah Hill in Year 11 who broke a record with a 1500m time of 05:06.44min. It was great to see all the house leaders running alongside participants from their house, especially on the last lap when getting to the finish line can prove to be a bit of a challenge.

During the day many girls broke records. In Year 9 Emma McKay broke the long jump record with a jump of 4.9m and Jess Tyrrell broke both the discus and shot put records. In Year 10 Caitlin O’Donnell broke the 100m (12.75s) and 200m (27.66s) records and Sophie Miller broke the shot put record with brilliant throw of 8.62m. In Year 11 the discus was record was broken by Tahlia Roome who threw 24.75m. In Year 12 Ruby Timmins smashed the discus record with a throw of 25.35m. Finally in Year 13, Leah Billyard broke the discus record with a throw of 25.23m.

The year level champions for 2017 are as follows:

Year 9 - Jess Tyrrell

Year 10 - Caitlin O’Donnell

Year 11 - Tahlia Roome

Year 12 - Taylor Thorne

Year 13 - Becky Paterson

At the end of the day, Principal Ms Miller announced the largely anticipated house results. After many changes of the leaderboard across the whole day, Cruickshank came out on top. Cruickshank came 1st in costume and chant and came 2nd in banner and events. Following Cruickshank was Allan, followed by Williams then Benjamin.

Sports day was a very successful and enjoyable day where the PB4L values were superbly demonstrated by all involved. Finally, thank you to all staff and students that volunteered on the day to make it run as smoothly as possible, especially Mr Richards and Ms Hokianga for all the time and effort towards organizing the amazing day.
