New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Track and Field Athletics Championships

Mrs V. Millar, TIC Athletics —

Nine girls travelled to Auckland to compete in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Track and Field Athletics Championships. This is one of the biggest sporting events held in New Zealand with over 1400 athletes competing in Junior (Under 16) and Senior (Over 16) sections.

The championships were held at Waitakere Trust Stadium from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 December.   All the girls represented Otago Girls’ with pride and there were a number of season and personal bests that were achieved over the weekend.

Highlights of the championship include:

· Caitlin O’Donnell finished 4th in the Junior Girls’ 400m semi-final with a personal best time and placing her 10th in New Zealand

· Jenna Thorne placed 7th in the Senior Girls’ 300m hurdles, with a new personal time in qualifying for the final.

· Gemma Millar placed 7th in the Senior Girls’ hammer, with a new personal best distance.

· Junior Girls’ 4x400m relay team (Caitlin O’Donnell, Rebekah Hill, Sophie Miller and Hannah Matehaere) placed 5th. This is an amazing result for a team of Under 14 athletes.
